Overview

High Plank is an isometric hold in which your body stays in one straight line from head to heels while you support yourself on your hands and toes. Compared with the forearm plank, you keep the arms straight, which places more demand on the chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. This drill develops muscular endurance and spinal alignment, and it also prepares you for exercises such as push-ups and burpees. It works well for all fitness levels and is widely used in yoga, calisthenics, and strength training.

How to do it

  1. 1

Set up in a push-up position with your hands directly under your shoulders and your legs stretched out behind you.

  2. 2

Brace your core, contract your glutes, and keep your body aligned from head to heels.

  3. 3

Drive through your hands and keep your shoulders active and steady.

  4. 4

Stay in the hold and breathe evenly while avoiding any arching or sagging.

  5. 5

Start with 20–30 seconds, then increase the duration as your strength improves.

Form tips & common mistakes

Hold your head in a neutral position. Do not let your neck drop or jut forward.

Contract your glutes to help protect your lower back.

Tighten your quads to keep your body rigid.

Spread your weight evenly across your hands and toes.

Keep breathing steadily. Do not hold your breath.

Benefits

Strengthens the Entire Core: Trains the abdominals, obliques, and deep core stabilizers at the same time.

Improves Postural Alignment: Reinforces proper spinal position and shoulder control.

Builds Upper Body Endurance: Challenges the shoulders, triceps, and chest with isometric tension.

Enhances Functional Stability: Carries over to real-world movement patterns such as pushing, lifting, and carrying.

Supports Injury Prevention: A strong core helps lower the risk of low back pain and postural imbalances.

Adaptable to All Levels: Easy to modify for beginners or make harder with variations like shoulder taps or sliders.

Requires No Equipment: You can do it anywhere as part of a fast, effective workout.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I hold a high plank?

Begin with 20–30 seconds and progress to 60 seconds or more as your core gets stronger.

Is the high plank better than the forearm plank?

Both are effective. High plank uses more upper-body muscles, while forearm plank emphasizes deeper core stabilizers.

Can I do planks every day?

Yes, as long as your form stays solid and your volume is moderate. They are low impact and well suited to daily practice.

Does the high plank build muscle?

Yes, it builds endurance and stability in the core and upper body, especially when you pair it with movement-based variations.

What’s a good progression from a high plank?

Use shoulder taps, plank walks, or high-to-low plank transitions to develop dynamic core strength.
