Overview

The Standing Smith Machine Shoulder Press is a compound lift that works the shoulders, especially the deltoids, along with the triceps and upper back muscles. You perform it on a Smith machine, which guides the bar through a controlled path. Follow these steps to do the Standing Smith Machine Shoulder Press correctly:

How to do it

  1. 1

Set the Smith machine bar to the right height. When you stand under it, the bar should line up with your shoulders.

  2. 2

Stand facing the Smith machine with your feet about shoulder-width apart. Step under the bar and make sure it feels balanced and secure.

  3. 3

Take an overhand grip on the barbell, a little wider than shoulder-width. Keep your palms facing forward.

  4. 4

Tighten your core and keep good posture from start to finish. Lift your chest and pull your shoulders back.

  5. 5

Start the descent by bending your elbows and bringing the bar down toward your shoulders. Keep your forearms perpendicular to the floor.

  6. 6

Drive the barbell overhead by straightening your arms. Exhale as you press.

  7. 7

Hold briefly at the top. Keep your arms fully extended, but do not lock out.

  8. 8

Bring the barbell back down with control. Inhale on the way down, then repeat for your target reps.

  9. 9

Stay aligned and keep your technique solid throughout the movement. Do not overarch your lower back or lean backward.

  10. 10

Keep your core braced and your glutes lightly squeezed. This helps with stability and limits lower back arching.

  11. 11

Hold a neutral neck position. Do not let your head drift too far forward or back.

  12. 12

Move smoothly and under control. Do not jerk the bar or use momentum to complete the lift.

  13. 13

Keep your elbows slightly in front of your body instead of flaring them out to the sides. This helps target the shoulder muscles more effectively.

  14. 14

Breathe naturally through the exercise. Exhale during the concentric (lifting) phase and inhale during the eccentric (lowering) phase.

  15. 15

Choose a load that challenges you while still letting you keep proper form and control. Add weight gradually as you get stronger. If you feel discomfort or pain, lower the weight or speak with a fitness professional or healthcare provider.
