Overview

How to perform Side Neck Stretch: Keep your head centered in the midline. Slowly bend your head to the left so your ear moves toward your shoulder. Go only as far as you can without pain. Hold for 10-20 seconds. Return your head to the starting position, then repeat the lateral flexion on the other side.

How to do it

  1. 1

Neck stretches are used in physical therapy to help restore the neck muscles, joints and bones. Neck stretches help improve the strength, tone and flexibility of the neck muscles. They also help the ligaments around the neck joints become more flexible and tolerate greater stress in the area.

  2. 2

If your head and shoulders move forward from poor posture, certain chest and neck muscles can shorten and become tight over time. This can reinforce the posture that is contributing to neck pain. Neck stretching exercises can help release postural muscles and may reduce neck pain.
