Overview

Created by bodybuilding coach Vince Gironda for his student Larry Scott, the Scott Press is a shoulder exercise that works all three heads of the shoulder at the same time. As you press, you follow an arc and rotate the wrists, which lets the lateral, front, and rear deltoids work together in one smooth motion. That full-shoulder involvement is what makes the Scott Press different from many other shoulder movements and a strong option for balanced shoulder development.

How to do it

  1. 1

Take a dumbbell in each hand and begin with your arms lifted to shoulder height, elbows bent to about 90 degrees. Keep your palms facing each other.

  2. 2

Move through the press with a rotational pattern, the same way you would with the Arnold Press.

  3. 3

Just before the dumbbells reach the top, turn them slightly up and out, then bring your wrists back to the start position with your palms facing each other. Repeat the pattern.

  4. 4

Continue for the target number of repetitions.

  5. 5

Picture this as a shorter Arnold Press, and do not drive the weight all the way overhead like a shoulder press.

  6. 6

Keep the motion controlled the whole time so you do not jerk or swing the dumbbells.

  7. 7

Begin with a lighter load so you can learn the movement, then add weight gradually as your technique improves.

  8. 8

Keep steady tension on the shoulder muscles through the full range of motion.

  9. 9

Breathe normally as you train. Exhale while you press the dumbbells up, and inhale as you lower them.
