V-bar Pushdown
Overview
How to do it
- 1
Prepare the Cable Station: Fasten the V-bar to the high pulley. Set the weight stack to a suitable resistance.
- 2
Stand Upright and Hold the Bar: Face the cable machine and take a neutral grip on the V-bar with both hands, keeping your elbows close to your sides.
- 3
Set Your Stance: Lift your chest, brace your core, and place your feet shoulder-width apart. Lean forward slightly to stay stable.
- 4
Drive the Bar Down: Extend your elbows to press the bar downward while keeping your upper arms still. Contract the triceps hard at the bottom.
- 5
Lower With Control: Let the bar rise slowly back to the start without allowing your elbows to move forward. Keep tension on the triceps the whole time.
Form tips & common mistakes
Keep elbows tight: Your elbows should stay close to your sides throughout the movement to fully isolate the triceps.
Use a full range of motion: Fully extend at the bottom and return with control for maximum activation.
Brace your core: Tighten your core and glutes to avoid using momentum or leaning back.
Avoid wrist flexion: Keep your wrists straight and neutral throughout the movement.
Exhale on the push: Breathe out as you press the bar down, and inhale as you return to the top.
Benefits
Targets all three heads of the triceps: The V-bar grip allows balanced activation of the long, lateral, and medial heads of the triceps.
Reduces wrist strain: The semi-neutral grip position is wrist-friendly and more comfortable than straight-bar attachments.
Improves pressing performance: Strong triceps enhance lockout strength in pressing movements like the bench press and overhead press.
Builds defined arms: Isolating the triceps contributes to arm size and shape, especially when combined with compound exercises.
Easy to modify for all levels: The weight and form can be adjusted to suit beginners or advanced lifters, making it a versatile exercise.
