Overview

The Close-Grip Dumbbell Push-Up (One Dumbbell Version) is a push-up variation that uses a single dumbbell for a narrow hand position. This setup places a bigger demand on the triceps, inner chest, and core than a standard push-up, while also promoting even force through both arms. The close grip also creates a greater stability challenge and builds midline control.

How to do it

  1. 1

Position your dumbbell: Stand one dumbbell upright on the floor so the handle is vertical and easy for both hands to hold. A hex or rubber dumbbell gives the best stability.

  2. 2

Take your grip: Place both hands on the handle and stack them firmly around the middle. Wrap your thumbs around the top for extra control.

  3. 3

Move into plank: Walk your feet back until your body makes a straight line from head to heels, with your shoulders directly over the dumbbell.

  4. 4

Descend under control: Bend your elbows and keep them tucked near your ribs as you lower your chest toward your hands. Keep your core tight so you do not dip.

  5. 5

Press to the top: Drive through the dumbbell to return to the start, fully straightening your elbows while keeping the dumbbell steady.

Form tips & common mistakes

Choose a stable dumbbell: Pick one with a flat base so it does not roll or tip.

Keep elbows tucked: Use a narrow path to stress the triceps and support the shoulders.

Brace your core: Tighten your abdominals and glutes to prevent hip sag or back arch.

Hold the dumbbell firmly: Keep both hands wrapped tightly around the handle for stability.

Use controlled reps: Lower and press with slow, deliberate tempo for better muscle activation.

Benefits

Works the triceps and inner chest: The narrow grip increases triceps activation and places more emphasis on the inner pectorals.

Builds pressing symmetry: Using one dumbbell helps develop balanced push strength between both arms.

Is easier on the wrists: The neutral wrist position from holding a dumbbell can reduce joint strain.

Increases range of motion: The raised grip lets your chest drop slightly lower than in a floor push-up.

Needs little equipment: You only need one dumbbell and your bodyweight to train upper-body strength anywhere.
