Overview
How to do it
- 1
Prepare your suspension trainer: Set the TRX straps or rings so the handles hang just above the ground at mid-shin height.
- 2
Assume the push-up position: Put your hands in the handles or rings, then walk your feet back until you are in a plank. Keep your arms fully extended, with your wrists under your shoulders.
- 3
Set your torso: Brace your core, keep your spine neutral, hold your hips level, and engage your glutes to stop swinging.
- 4
Lower your chest: Bend your elbows and bring your chest down between the handles, keeping your elbows at a 45-degree angle from your torso.
- 5
Press to the top: Push through your palms to come back up, fully extending your elbows while keeping the rings or straps steady.
Form tips & common mistakes
Keep your core tight: Brace your abs and glutes for the full movement to stop swinging.
Control your descent: Lower yourself slowly and with purpose so you do not lose balance.
Align your wrists and elbows: Keep your elbows on a 45-degree path to protect your shoulders.
Stabilize the straps: Work to keep the handles or rings from drifting apart as you move.
Maintain body tension: Keep a straight line from head to heels and avoid letting your hips sag.
Benefits
Improves shoulder and joint stability: The unstable setup recruits deep stabilizers that help protect and strengthen the shoulder joints.
Enhances core strength: Staying balanced forces your entire core to work on every rep.
Develops upper body strength: The instability makes the chest, triceps, and deltoids work harder than in floor push-ups.
Increases proprioception: Training in an unstable environment improves body awareness and neuromuscular coordination.
Adapts easily to skill level: You can scale the exercise up or down by changing body angle or foot positioning.
