Overview

The Smith Machine Hex Press is a strength-focused move for the chest and triceps. It puts extra emphasis on the inner chest, or pectoralis major, while also involving the triceps and anterior deltoids. Its key trait is the close hand position on the V-bar, which increases tension on the inner chest as you press. This variation may help you push past plateaus and support muscle growth.

How to do it

  1. 1

Set up on the bench under the Smith Machine bar.

  2. 2

Attach a V grip and hold the handles with your palms facing one another and your knuckles lined up.

  3. 3

Keep your wrists neutral to help limit strain and improve pressing force.

  4. 4

Press the bar upward to release it from the rack.

  5. 5

Start with your arms straight and the bar positioned directly over your chest.

  6. 6

Lower the bar slowly toward your chest to begin the rep.

  7. 7

Stay controlled so the V grip handles move steadily toward your chest.

  8. 8

When the V grip lightly touches your chest, drive the bar up explosively with your chest muscles.

  9. 9

Think about pushing the floor away as you engage your chest for maximum force.

  10. 10

At the top, with your arms fully extended, pause for one second and squeeze your chest muscles.

  11. 11

This squeeze increases engagement and helps promote muscle activation.

  12. 12

Lower the bar again with control, and emphasize the eccentric (negative) phase of the lift.

  13. 13

Keep tension in your chest muscles as you control the descent.

  14. 14

Complete the planned number of repetitions with solid form and control.

Form tips & common mistakes

Use a controlled tempo on both the eccentric and concentric phases to maximize muscle engagement.

Match your breathing to the lift: inhale during the eccentric (lowering) phase and exhale during the concentric (pressing) phase.

Keep your shoulder blades retracted and depressed throughout the exercise to ensure optimal chest activation.

Benefits

Targeted Inner Chest Development

The close-grip setup and pressing path on the Smith Machine place specific emphasis on the inner chest fibers, which can improve definition and strength in this area.

Triceps Activation

Because the Smith Machine guides the bar path, it can help isolate the triceps effectively and support greater triceps strength and definition.

Joint-Friendly Variation

The guided movement of the Smith Machine can reduce strain on the wrists and shoulders, making it a suitable option for individuals with joint concerns.

Versatility for All Levels

Beginners can benefit from the added stability, while more experienced lifters can utilize heavier weights for progressive overload.

Strength Transfer

Building strength with the Smith Machine Hex Press can improve performance in other pressing exercises such as bench presses and push-ups.
