Overview

The Lying Chest Press Machine is a guided strength exercise that follows the same pressing pattern as a standard bench press, but with more stability and control. It works the pectoralis major (chest muscles) and also recruits supporting muscles such as the triceps and anterior deltoids.

How to do it

  1. 1

Set the seat height so the handles line up with mid-chest when you sit down.

  2. 2

Lean back with your spine pressed into the backrest and your feet flat on the floor.

  3. 3

Take an overhand grip on the handles and keep your wrists straight.

  4. 4

    Starting Position

Extend your arms to hold the handles, but keep a slight bend in the elbows so you do not lock out.Engage your core and keep your shoulders down and back.

  5. 5

    Lowering Phase

Guide the handles down toward your chest in a smooth, controlled way.Stop when your elbows reach chest level or slightly below it.

  6. 6

    Pressing Phase

Drive the handles back to the start by straightening your arms, and squeeze your chest at the top of the movement.

  7. 7

    Repeat

Continue for the planned number of repetitions while keeping control and proper form.

Form tips & common mistakes

Focus on Muscle Contraction

Contract your chest at the top of the press to get the most out of the movement.

Control the Eccentric Phase

Lower the handles with control to increase time under tension and support muscle growth.

Pair with Free Weights

Add exercises like the bench press or dumbbell fly for a more complete chest workout.

Vary Grip Positions

Try different grips, such as narrow or wide, to emphasize different areas of the chest.

Breathe Properly

Exhale as you press the handles up and inhale as you lower them back.

Benefits

Chest Muscle Development

Targets the chest effectively to help build strength and definition.

Joint-Friendly Option

The guided path can reduce stress on the shoulders and wrists, which may suit people with joint issues.

Increased Stability

The machine adds support and balance, so you can concentrate on the pressing motion instead of stabilizing the load.

Safe for Beginners

A strong option for new lifters because it supports proper form and lowers injury risk.

Progressive Overload

Weight changes are simple, making it easier to keep building strength and muscle over time.

Isolation of Chest Muscles

Limits the contribution of secondary muscles, placing more emphasis on the chest.
