Overview

The High Pulley Overhead Tricep Extension uses a cable machine with either a rope or a straight bar attachment. You extend your elbows overhead, which helps you fully lengthen and contract the triceps.

Because the triceps work from a different angle here, the emphasis shifts. Many lifters notice they can produce more force in this position, but the real test is whether your core can keep you stable. The cable load will try to pull you backward, so your abdominal muscles must stay active to hold your body in the right position.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Setup and Starting Position

    • Set a rope or straight bar attachment on a high pulley of a cable machine.
    • Stand with your back to the machine and hold the handle with both hands.
    • Take a small step forward and keep your feet shoulder-width apart for balance.
    • Bring the handle overhead, with your elbows near your ears and bent to 90 degrees.
  2. 2

    Execution

    • Drive your arms forward and upward until your elbows straighten completely.
    • Contract your triceps hard at the top of the rep.
    • Lower back to the start under control.
    • Perform 8 to 12 reps for 3 to 4 sets.

Benefits

Emphasizes the Long Head of the Triceps: The overhead position fully stretches the long head, leading to greater muscle activation.

Provides Continuous Tension: The cable machine maintains constant resistance, increasing muscle engagement throughout the movement.

Enhances Triceps Strength and Definition: The controlled movement improves muscle endurance and shape, making it ideal for aesthetic and strength goals.

Reduces Joint Strain: Unlike free weights, the cable system minimizes wrist and elbow stress, making it a joint-friendly exercise.

Improves Lockout Strength: Strengthening the triceps helps improve pressing movements like the bench press and overhead press.
