Overview

Front Rack PVC Stretch is a mobility drill that uses a light PVC pipe to rehearse the front rack position while focusing on alignment and joint range of motion. When you hold the PVC with your elbows high and your upper arms level with the floor, you open the thoracic spine and stretch the wrists and shoulders. Lifters often use it in Olympic lifting warm-ups and corrective mobility sessions.

How to do it

  1. 1

Hold a PVC pipe at shoulder width with your palms turned up in a supinated grip.

  2. 2

Bring the pipe to chest height and set it in the front rack position.

  3. 3

Drive your elbows up until they match the ground.

  4. 4

Draw the bar gently against your neck or collarbone while keeping your wrists extended and your shoulders externally rotated.

  5. 5

Stay in the position for 20–30 seconds, keeping your upper back upright and your ribcage down.

  6. 6

Perform 2–3 sets and breathe deeply to support relaxation and range of motion.

Form tips & common mistakes

Maintain lifted elbows that stay level with the floor for the whole stretch.

Do not let your shoulders creep up toward your ears.

Keep your grip loose so your forearms do not tense up too much.

Brace your core so you do not overarch your lower back.

Use slow, deep breathing to help deepen the stretch and improve control.

Benefits

Improves Front Rack Position: Helps you stay more upright and support the bar better during cleans and front squats.

Increases Wrist Flexibility: Stretches the wrist extensors, which can reduce discomfort during barbell lifts.

Enhances Shoulder External Rotation: Supports better joint alignment in overhead and rack positions.

Promotes Thoracic Extension: Opens the upper back for improved posture and breathing mechanics.

Reduces Risk of Injury: Targets common tightness in the rack position, helping reduce strain on wrists and elbows.

Improves Lifting Efficiency: Helps you perform stronger, more technically sound front squats and Olympic lifts.

Works Well in Warm-Ups: Easy to carry and useful for pre-lift routines, movement prep, or cool-downs.

Frequently asked questions

Is the front rack PVC stretch good for wrist pain?

Yes. It helps stretch tight wrist extensors, but modify or reduce intensity if discomfort increases.

Can I do this daily?

Absolutely. Light daily mobility work improves long-term joint health and range of motion.

What can I use instead of a PVC pipe?

A broomstick, wooden dowel, or light bar will also work.

Why are my elbows dropping during the stretch?

You may have limited shoulder or triceps mobility. Practice consistently and gradually increase range.

Does it help my clean technique?

Yes. A more mobile and upright front rack position improves bar placement, stability, and transition to the squat.
