Overview

Dumbbell Upward Fly is a strength exercise that places most of the load on the upper chest, especially the clavicle head of the pectoralis major. It is usually done with lighter weights and more repetitions, which makes it a strong option for building muscle definition. You can also use it in supersets to make the session more demanding.

How to do it

  1. 1

    Set Up

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Hold a dumbbell in each hand, and turn your palms forward. Start with a weight that matches your current fitness level.

  2. 2

    Starting Position

Let your arms hang straight down at your sides, with the dumbbells near your thighs.

  3. 3

    The Movement

Inhale, then raise both dumbbells forward and upward in a wide arc at a slow pace. Keep your attention on squeezing your upper chest as you move. Keep lifting until the dumbbells come together in front of your chest, or just above chest height. Briefly pause at the top and feel the upper chest contract.

  4. 4

    Return to Starting Position

As you exhale, lower the dumbbells back down along the same wide arc until you return to the starting position with your arms extended at your sides.

Form tips & common mistakes

Focus on Form

Move slowly and with control to get the most muscle activation.

Pause at the Top

Hold the top position for one second to make the contraction stronger.

Breathe Properly

Exhale on the lift and inhale on the way down.

Combine with Other Exercises

Use it with incline presses and push-ups for a complete upper chest workout.

Benefits

Upper Chest Emphasis

The upward path strongly works the clavicular head, helping build upper chest strength and definition.

Improved Shoulder Stability

It engages stabilizing muscles around the shoulders, which can lower injury risk.

Enhanced Muscle Stretch and Contraction

The wide range of motion supports better muscle fiber activation and flexibility.

Isolation of Chest Muscles

It keeps the focus on the chest with little help from other muscle groups, making it useful for sculpting and toning.

Joint-Friendly Movement

The natural arc of the movement places less stress on the shoulder and elbow joints, so it can be a safer choice than heavier pressing exercises.
