Cable Rope Overhead Triceps Extension
Overview
You will usually do this exercise standing, but you can also perform it seated or kneeling to change the difficulty and muscle demand.
How to do it
- 1
Setup: Fasten the rope attachment to the cable machine pulley. Stand with your back to the machine and hold the rope with both hands in a neutral grip, palms facing each other. Step forward a little to create cable tension, then place your feet shoulder-width apart.
- 2
Starting Position: Lift your arms overhead with your elbows bent and aimed forward. Keep your hands behind your head, and brace your core to stay stable.
- 3
Execution: Press the rope upward and forward until your elbows are fully extended. Contract your triceps hard at the top for maximum squeeze. Lower the rope slowly back to the start, keeping control so the tension stays on the muscle.
- 4
Repetitions and Breathing: Complete 10-15 repetitions per set, based on your training goals. Breathe in as you lower the rope, then breathe out as you extend your arms.
Form tips & common mistakes
Keep your elbows near your head and do not let them flare outward.
Keep a neutral spine and brace your core to stay stable.
Move with control to get the most triceps engagement.
Do not use too much weight if it breaks your form.
Lock out your elbows at the top to fully recruit the triceps.
Benefits
The cable machine keeps resistance on the muscle through the full range of motion, which can improve muscle activation.
It works all three heads of the triceps effectively for balanced growth and definition.
It builds upper-body strength that carries over to pressing exercises.
The rope attachment supports a natural hand position, which can lessen wrist and elbow strain.
You can adjust the load and reps to match different intensity levels.
It can help shape and define the triceps for a more athletic appearance.
