Overview

The One-Arm Reverse Pushdown is a single-arm triceps exercise done on a cable machine. Instead of the usual overhand grip used in a standard pushdown, this version uses an underhand, supinated grip. That change shifts muscle emphasis, recruiting the medial head of the triceps more strongly while also involving the forearm flexors. Use it to build arm strength, improve muscle control, and help correct imbalances. It can also address symmetry differences, such as one arm being larger than the other.

Form tips & common mistakes

Keep a neutral spine and do not lean forward or backward.

Hold your elbow close to your torso so the triceps do the work.

Use controlled movement and avoid jerking or using momentum.

Work through a full range of motion and fully extend the elbow.

Tighten your core to stay stable during the entire movement.

Benefits

Improves Triceps Strength and Definition: The One-Arm Reverse Pushdown strongly trains the triceps, especially the medial head, helping you develop stronger and more defined arms.

Enhances Muscle Symmetry: Because you train one arm at a time, this exercise helps reduce imbalances that can develop when both arms work together. It helps both triceps grow evenly.

Strengthens the Forearms and Grip: The underhand grip increases forearm flexor activity, which can improve grip strength and wrist stability for other upper-body exercises.

Supports Performance in Compound Movements: Strong triceps are important in pressing exercises like bench presses, push-ups, and overhead presses. Building this muscle group can improve overall upper-body strength and performance.

Reduces Strain on the Elbows: Compared with the traditional pushdown, the reverse grip version places less stress on the elbow joint, making it a useful choice if other triceps exercises cause discomfort.
