Decline Cable Fly
Overview
How to do it
- 1
Place the pulleys on a cable machine in a high position, above shoulder level.
- 2
Clip D-handles onto both cables.
- 3
Stand centered between the cables with a handle in each hand.
- 4
Slightly hinge your torso forward and open your arms to the sides with a small bend in the elbows.
- 5
Starting Position
Set your arms out to the sides with your palms facing forward and a slight bend in your elbows. Brace your core to steady your body.
- 6
Contraction Phase
Sweep the handles down and in along a wide arc until your hands meet in front of your hips. Squeeze your chest at the bottom of the movement.
- 7
Return Phase
Reverse the path slowly and bring your arms back to the starting position. Keep control so the cables stay under tension the whole time.
- 8
Repeat
Complete the desired number of repetitions with smooth, controlled reps.
Form tips & common mistakes
Keep your attention on contracting the chest during the contraction phase.
Lower the cables slowly to increase time under tension and support muscle growth.
Set the cables at the right height so you can target the lower chest effectively.
Exhale as you pull the handles downward and inhale as you return to the starting position.
Use it alongside incline and flat chest exercises for complete chest development.
Benefits
Directs work to the lower chest for a more balanced, defined chest look.
The cables keep resistance on the muscles throughout the movement, boosting activation.
Focuses on the chest muscles to help sculpt and tone the lower chest area.
Creates a deeper stretch at the top and a stronger squeeze at the bottom of the movement.
The controlled arc can reduce stress on the shoulder and elbow joints compared with heavy pressing movements.
Works for lifters of all levels because you can adjust the resistance easily.
Can help address muscle imbalances by training each side on its own.
