The Sphinx is a valuable yoga pose for opening the upper body while building more strength and mobility in the mid-back and thoracic spine. It works the erector spinae muscles, which help support the spine. Strong back muscles can help prevent postural deviations that contribute to poor posture and discomfort, including kyphosis (“hunchback”). Sphinx movement can improve your posture by extending your back muscles and easing tension between your lower back and core areas. It also increases lower back strength, which helps you stay upright more easily during the day.
