Overview

Smith Machine Good Morning is a good morning variation performed on a Smith machine. It works the lower back, hamstrings, and glutes. Because the bar path is fixed, the Smith machine can offer more stability and control than a free barbell. That makes this exercise a practical choice for beginners or for anyone who wants a more controlled movement.

How to do it

  1. 1

Set up facing the Smith machine with your feet about shoulder-width apart and the barbell positioned across your shoulders.

  2. 2

Lift your chest and keep your core tight.

  3. 3

Hinge slowly at the hips, send your glutes back, and lower your torso toward the floor.

  4. 4

Continue lowering until your torso is parallel to the floor.

  5. 5

Hold briefly at the bottom, then raise your torso slowly back to the starting position.

  6. 6

Perform the desired number of repetitions.

Form tips & common mistakes

Use a light load at first so you can learn the movement and maintain proper form.

Drive the motion from the hips and keep your back straight.

Do not use too much weight, especially if you are new to the exercise.

Speak with a healthcare professional if you have any pre-existing conditions or concerns about performing this exercise.
