Lean Planche
Overview
How to do it
- 1
Set Up in a Push-Up Position: Begin in a standard push-up position with your hands a little wider than shoulder-width apart.
- 2
Drive the Shoulders Forward: Use your arms and shoulders to move your body forward until your shoulders pass beyond your hands. Keep your elbows straight.
- 3
Tighten Your Core: Brace your core to stop your lower back from sagging, and keep your body in one straight line from head to feet.
- 4
Raise Your Feet From the Floor: Gradually shift more of your weight into your hands and brace your core harder as you lift your feet off the ground. Let only the tips of your toes lightly contact the floor for minimal support.
- 5
Maintain the Hold: Stay in the forward-leaning position and keep your body as close to horizontal as you can. Hold for the prescribed time, and extend the duration as your strength improves.
Form tips & common mistakes
Lock out the arms: Keep your elbows straight and your arms fully extended to reduce strain and better recruit the shoulders.
Brace the core: Contract your abdominal muscles to avoid arching or collapsing through the lower back.
Press through the palms: Push firmly into the floor with your palms to keep your body stable and stop yourself from tipping forward.
Keep your gaze neutral: Look slightly in front of you to support alignment and limit neck strain.
Use small leans first: Start with a modest forward lean, then increase the angle gradually as your shoulder and core strength improve.
