Overview

Jump Squats are a high-intensity bodyweight exercise for the legs and glutes. You drive up explosively from a squat to build lower-body power, train fast-twitch muscle fibers, and improve vertical jump ability. Coaches often program them for sports conditioning, functional training, plyometric work, and high-intensity sessions.

How to do it

  1. 1

Stand upright with your feet about shoulder-width apart and your arms relaxed at your sides.

  2. 2

Drop into a squat by bending your hips and knees until your thighs are parallel to the floor.

  3. 3

Push hard through the floor and jump as high as you can while using your arms to help create momentum.

  4. 4

Return to the ground softly, bending your knees to absorb the landing through your legs.

  5. 5

Move straight into the next squat and continue for the target number of reps.

Form tips & common mistakes

Keep your landing soft and your knees bent to help protect your joints.

Hold your chest tall and brace your core throughout the squat and jump.

Press through your heels to produce force from your glutes and quads.

Do not allow your knees to cave inward on takeoff or landing.

Stay in a steady rhythm, but choose control over speed.

Benefits

Builds Explosive Power: The jump pattern trains fast-twitch muscle fibers for greater athletic output and vertical leap.

Increases Lower Body Strength: Jump squats activate the quads, glutes, hamstrings, and calves under load.

Improves Cardiovascular Fitness: Performed in high-rep sets, this movement elevates heart rate and builds endurance.

Boosts Athletic Performance: It increases performance and improves agility in sports that require running, jumping, or quick changes of direction.

Enhances Coordination and Balance: Landing and jumping in rhythm develops proprioception and body control.

Burns More Calories: The high-intensity, full-body nature of jump squats increases calorie expenditure.

Requires No Equipment: It is a versatile, accessible bodyweight exercise suitable for home or gym workouts.
