Dumbbell Sumo Deadlift
Overview
How to do it
- 1
Setup
Take a stance wider than shoulder-width and turn your toes slightly outward. That wide position is a defining feature of the sumo deadlift. Set a dumbbell on the floor between your feet. Use one or two dumbbells, based on what feels best for you and the load you can handle comfortably.
- 2
Grip the Dumbbells
Hinge at your hips and bend your knees to lower yourself. Keep your chest lifted, your back straight, and your core tight. Reach down and hold the dumbbells with an overhand grip (palms facing each other) between your legs.
- 3
Lift
Exhale, then rise by pressing through your heels and extending your hips and knees at the same time. Keep the dumbbells close to your body as you stand. Hold a neutral spine for the entire rep. Do not round your lower back.
- 4
Finish
At the top, stand tall with your hips fully extended and your shoulders back. Pause briefly, then reverse the motion by bending your hips and knees to bring the dumbbells back to the floor. Lower the weight with control so you do not slam it down.
- 5
Repeat
Complete the target number of repetitions, then return the dumbbells to the starting position with care.
Form tips & common mistakes
Begin with a light load so you can lock in proper form, then add weight gradually as the movement feels more natural.
Keep the dumbbell close to your body for the full lift to reduce stress on your lower back.
Stay in a neutral spine position. Avoid rounding or arching your back.
Drive through your heels as you lift and lower the weight to better recruit your hamstrings and glutes.
Move with control. Do not rush the exercise; prioritize technique.
